The adult beetle emerges from the tree in the spring, feeds on the leaves for a few weeks before laying their eggs in the bark of the tree, first in the upper canopy of the tree.
When the eggs hatch, the larvae feeds on the inner layers of the tree responsible for the movement of water and nutrients down to the roots and up to the leaves. Once the population is heavy enough (1-3 years), this nutrient supply is compromised and the tree begins to die.
It takes about 3-5 years to completely kill the tree.
If you are already facing an infestation, it may be too late. It is estimated that once an Ash tree loses 30% of its canopy, there is no saving it from the inevitable. However, just because an Ash tree is infected, does not mean there is no hope. Treatment for a tree consists of supplying the tree with the correct insecticide that it will use to kill off and defend itself against EAB. Removal of a tree consists of cutting down the tree and following the necessary county guidelines for handling the wood. Waiting too long to take action could end up costing you thousands of dollars.
